The Charm of Small Town Life – Hoyos, Spain (life in a small town in spain, spain map charm)

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow video of a travel blog to Moraleja, Spain by TravelPod blogger Ksullivan.

The Charm of Small Town Life
“So I’m really loving this small town lifestyle. Sure it has it’s negative aspects (pretty much all of which would be resolved if I didn’t have to depend on public transportation), but the good aspects far out way the bad. It’s really just the small, everyday occurences that give the town its charm so I’ve composed a list of incidents to help portray this way of life:

*Everyone offers to help: one of my student’s grandma and mom when I happened to walk by their house while they were outside talking my first week here; the mom of one of the girls I tutor; multiple teachers from school who live in Moraleja. . .

*On a not so good morning, I tried to catch a bus to Caceres but for reasons I’m not going to get into, I couldn’t take it. After I had walked away from the station, a thought occured to me and I started walking back, hoping to catch the bus before I left so I could ask the bus driver a question. Unfortunately, he had already left the bus station and was sitting at a red light. That didn’t matter, he opened the door and answered all my questions while he waited for the light to turn green.

*I was on a bus back to Moraleja late at night. We stopped in the town before mine, and one person got off. The bus driver announced the town’s name again and then, “There’s was another girl.” He then proceeded to get up and look for the girl who was sitting a few seats behind me, asleep. He woke her up and off she went. That would never happen in a big city, mostly because there’s just too many people on the buses. I often take naps when I’m traveling by bus so it’s nice to know the bus drivers are aware of who, or at least how many people, should be getting off at each stop and care enough to pay attention!

Now, these two bus drivers I’ve mentioned are about the only two who drive through Moraleja and am officially fans of both of them. They’re just so nice and friendly!

*So, I had to set up a bank account so that I could get paid. There are two men that work there, and I had to talk to both of them throughout this process. After turning in all the paperwork and stuff, one of the nice bank worker men told me that I needed to make a call to set up my on-line account. He then walked me over to the vice-president’s desk where I sat down in the VP’s chair and used the VP’s phone to make the call so that the nice man could make sure I got everything worked out. Once I made the call, the nice man helped me, on the VP’s computer, to access my account for the first time to make sure I could do it. Oh, and when I asked the nice man what I needed to bring with me to take out money (ID, etc.) he said, “Nothing. We’ll recognize you.” Love it!

*After that pleasant visit, I went back one day to pay my rent. Not only did the two men recognize me, they remembered my name! (I should probably learn theirs. . . ) On one hand, my name would stick out among all those Spanish names, but on the other hand, I’d think it’d be a little harder to remember since it’s not a name they’re used to. Anyway, I was happily surprised by that. On top of that, they always talk to me for awhile, ask me how things are going, if I’m heading home for Christmas, etc.

*One colder day, I was sitting in the park working on my computer. The park benches are metal and therefore cold when it’s cold outside. One old man, as he was passing by me, felt the need to warn me that my behind was going to get cold if I sat there for a long time. He knew, he had just been sitting on a bench and now had a cold behind. So nice of him to warn me! :)
