Entry from: Torrevieja, Spain and Canary Islands
Entry Title: “Torrevieja”

Entry:

“We left the safety of Alicante to make our way further down the coast towards Cartagena in what was predicted to be a 15 – 20 knot breeze. I say “predicted to be” as the weather forecasts and we have 3 sources, have been proven to be wrong and grossly at that. And so 1hr along, the Med typical as ever decided to change her mind and whip up to a 35 – 40 knot gale. So from skipping along nicely it quickly went to be tossed around in a washing machine where everything was falling from cupboards and shelves which is an unusual occurrence for a cat. Once we secured everything again, Tom and Zac went back to the laptops as if nothing unusual was happening, Zac watching DVD’s and Tom on MSN talking with his mate Cullum. Harri went up with Pete to the helm and berated him for ruining his life and I went to my cabin and hid my head under the dooner. What choice did I have… Fortunately it only lasted for a couple of hours as we made our way into the relative serenity of the marina in Torrevieja.

The wind has been howling here for the last few days with gusts over 40knts and while we sit on our boat and hope it doesnt break lose we watch in horror as 5 boats (very large and expensive) on the Marina opposite us are being smashed together with bits of wood, fibreglass and stainless steel crunching and grinding. Not sure were the guys who work on the Marina are but I would be one very unhappy customer when I came to check on my boat next. The good thing about being holed up here unable to move is that it gives the boys a good chance to get stuck into their school work which is often hard to do while we are constantly moving.

Our American crew member Zac has hit his 1 year anniversary of travelling and we celebrated it in style at Murphy’s Irish Pub right here at the marina. One of the best meals I’ve had in Spain, sad isnt it….. The night was made even better as the boys were able to watch soccer on the big screen, made for interesting conversation… Lucky I didnt have far to walk home on my own as they watched the remainder of the game…..

On the last night the boys went to a fair thats along the boardwalk for a bit of bullriding and game playing. I’m not sure if Tom and Harri concquered the bulls but managed to have a good time anyway. They came home in a good mood and as I read quitely in bed they decided to pickup were they left off at the fair… Why didnt God give me girls ?…..”

Entry from: Buenos Aires, Argentina
Entry Title: “Last day in BA”

Entry:

“I had a few tears today because we are leaving Buenos Aires and this officially marks the end of our Mexico/Central America/South America adventure. I love Buenos Aires, especially the Palermo neighbourhoods. I want to live here someday. But for now we have our sights set on moving to Spain for awhile so one thing at a time I guess. We´ll go back to Calgary for a few weeks, sort out our life and then head to Ireland for a visit and then to Spain to set up there, learn more Spanish and find work. Perhaps another blog is in order for that adventure!

For now, I´ll share the last few tidbits about our time in Buenos Aires and some final photos. I´m so glad we finished our trip in BA as this is my new favorite city. If only I could understand people when they talk to me, things would be perfect! Seven weeks of Spanish and I can´t make out more than one in ten words that Argentinians say to me…

So when we returned from Iguazu, I was on a mission to see the Plaza Serrano in Palermo and the San Telmo district. Andy isn´t a huge fan of markets so I had to bribe him with a promise of a cold beer to get him to go with me. So on Sunday after our flight we headed to Plaza Serrano to check out the artisan market, buy a few souvenirs and sip beer in the shade. We were going to head to San Telmo for the Sunday market but it was getting too late. So we walked back to the Alma Petit Hostel in Cañitas and then went out for a pasta dinner.

On Monday, we took the bus to San Telmo. The buses, subways and trains in this city are great. Public transit is so easy to use, and so cheap and frequent that you would hardly need a car if you lived here. So San Telmo on a Monday is a bit quiet because their big day is Sunday. Boo hoo. But I did find a few gifts at the Plaza Dorrego and we had lunch at the famous Bar Plaza Dorrego. The walls are full of carvings and the place has this really authentic, charming appeal. They play tango music and serve peanuts with your beer. We had yummy salami and cheese baguettes and grenadine sodas. I never liked cold cuts before I came to this city but I have to say that the salami here is deee-lish.

After lunch we wandered around the streets of San Telmo, looked at the photos of celebrities in the window of Bar Sur – home of Tango dance shows. We didn´t take in a tango dinner show this trip as they are a bit pricey for our budget, but we did manage to see some couples dancing tango in the streets of BA for free! Then we headed back to Florida street and then back to the hostel.

For our last dinner in BA we went to a local parrilla restaurant in Cañitas called Las Cholas. We shared a feast of grilled sausages, steak, pork, chicken and vegetables (oh and lets not forget the fries). It was amazing. I can´t say enough about the grilled meat in this country. It is so good and so reasonably priced.

On January 15 we had some time to kill before our evening flight back to Calgary (via Dallas) so we wandered around Palermo and took a walk to the park to feed the ducks. Sadly this is the end of the trip but there will be a lot more exciting things in store for us. To all our family and friends in Calgary and Edmonton – see you soon! To our family and friends in Northern Ireland – see you soon too! And to everyone else who has checked out or followed our blog – we hope it has been helpful in some way. Hasta luego, nos vemos!”

“Moseing across the Mediterrainean” Jess76′s photos around Barcelona, Spain

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Barcelona, Spain by TravelPod blogger Jess76 titled “Moseing across the Mediterrainean”

Jess76′s travel blog entry:

“The trip to Western Europe inspired me, so in October I decided to leave Manchester behind and see Spain. I started off in Barcelona. I was there for about three days. What a city. The architecture and lifestyle was amazing, I think I was a bit overwhelmed by it all. Then there was the Spanish lifestyle. Get up about 1030am, do a little bit of something. Siesta time at about 2pm, then get out on the town at about 11pm for as long as you could! What amazed me about Barcelona is that you could wander thru the mazes of tiny little streets and discover something different around every turn, or they would open up into these great placas (or piazzas). The first day I arrived, I was really tired, but I just wanted to keep wanderin for as long as I could. Valencia was next, it started pouring rain the minute I arrived, and I had dodgy directions to the hostel, so not a happy camper! First impressions of Valencia weren’t good, but I decided to take a tour bus around the city (this is after I eventually found the hostel thanks to fellow backpackers!) Probably not one of my best ideas. Rain was still pouring down torrentially, the bus got stuck in peak hour traffic and to cap it all off, the bus was a double decker with a cover on the top level which broke and kept rolling back everytime the bus braked. Guess where I was sitting! But the next day dawned a beautiful 32 degree day, much better for exploring the city, so first impressions were discarded and I gave it another chance. The contrrast between the new and the old is very striking. It has some beautiful old buildings and a great market, while having an amazing arts ans science complex with a very ultra modern design As a use of public space I loved it! After exploring that, the rest of the day was vey uneventful, although I did have some of the best tapas in Spain. 1am came and I boarded a train for the 8 hour trip to Granada. It wasn’t too hard to wait that long, the city realy comes alive afte about 9pm. Granada was a diffeent story, it was ike a ghost town when I got there (but it was a Sunday after all).”
